'Convincing fake Microsoft Security Alert'...Beware it downloads a Trojan!
A clever phishing attack that fools users into downloading malicious software... This is done by mimicking a genuine Microsoft Windows security alert. Be aware!!
We have seen variations of this before, the email includes a link to a phishing website, this takes the victim to a fake website. The wording suggests that you have been sent the email due to a friends action, You are then shown a fake Microsoft 'start-up' screen.
A menu bar appears and says "Microsoft Security Alert 2012 has found critical activity on your PC and will perform fast scan of your systems files."
What appears to the victim is that their computer is being scanned. A 'Windows Security Alert' menu will then pop up with ‘Remove All' or ‘Cancel'.
If the person clicks Remove All, a file called setup.exe is downloaded, which infects the PC with a Trojan that harvests people's email contacts. So if you receive one of these type of emails....Remember this...Microsoft NEVER send alerts out in this medium !! Follow the advice at top of this article....BIN IT.
Again another email scam has started falling into Inboxes, Do not fall into the trap! HMRC do not ever contact customers
by emails: Report the scam to....'phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk'
Check their web site for other scams....http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/index.htm
Watch Out...There are Scams about!
Most of us never have to wait very long before another wretched scam arrives in our 'Inbox' babling on about some get rich scam or trying to deprive us of our banking details.
Such is the depth of scams and more importantly the range of the scams that we run the risk of becoming blase' about them arriving in our PC's. If we wish to keep our machines clean and working well the we must not ignor these 'nasties' when they arrive. The least we should do is to get rid of them by use of the 'Delete Button' As has been said many times on this site, Never,Never click on a link or 'Open' any part of the offending email.
So there you have it...If it looks suspicious, contains errors, is from Gov organisations and they address you by your christian name, there are so many things that can trigger uncertainty.......
Best defence... 'Don't Open the email' but do Delete it! and most importantly 'Never forward it on!!
